Troubleshootin missing Zoom meeting recordings
Issue
You cannot find a recording for a completed Zoom meeting even though you expected the meeting to be recorded. The recording may be missing from Recordings & Transcripts, saved on a computer instead of in the cloud, still Processing, or recorded by a third-party application instead of Zoom.
Common symptoms include:
- No recording appears in Recordings & Transcripts after the meeting ends.
- You heard this meeting is being recorded, but you cannot find the recording.
- The recording either stopped during the meeting or contains only part of it.
- A Recording in progress indicator appeared, but no recording was saved.
- A cloud recording remains in Processing or shows a conversion error.
- A local recording cannot be found on the host's or participant's computer.
- An AI notetaker or another recording application appears to have recorded the meeting instead of Zoom.
Note: If nobody started a Zoom recording, the meeting does not have a Zoom recording to recover.
Environment
This issue can occur in:
- Zoom Meetings, Webinars, and Zoom Workplace.
- Cloud recordings accessed through the Zoom web portal.
- Local recordings saved on Windows, Mac, or Linux computers.
- Meetings with automatic recording enabled or disabled.
- Meetings involving third-party AI note-taking or recording applications.
- Organizations that use third-party recording or archiving services.
Cause
A missing Zoom recording can have several causes, depending on how the meeting was recorded:
- The recording was never initiated: Automatic recording was disabled, and no participant started a manual recording.
- The recording was paused or stopped: The host or co-host stopped or paused recording and did not resume it.
- A third-party application caused recording confusion: An AI notetaker or another application displayed a recording notification even though Zoom's native recording was not active.
- Cloud storage capacity was exceeded: Cloud recording was disabled after the account reached its storage limit.
- Network connectivity affected recording: Poor connectivity prevented recording from starting or completing properly.
- The recording was saved locally: The recording may be on a participant's computer rather than in Zoom cloud storage.
- The cloud recording is still processing: A recording may take additional time to become available.
- The wrong Zoom account or meeting ID is being checked: The recording may belong to the account that hosted the meeting.
These causes are distinct, so first determine whether the meeting was recorded to the cloud, recorded locally, or recorded by a third-party application.
Resolution
Start with the following steps in order. They identify where the recording was saved before you move to recovery or troubleshooting.
1. Search Zoom for the recording
- Sign in to the Zoom web portal.
- In the left navigation panel, click Recordings & Transcripts.
- Check both tabs:
- Cloud recordings: Search by topic or Meeting ID. Use Advanced search for date range and status filters.
- Computer recordings: Search by date range.
- If no recording appears, ask the meeting participants whether anyone started recording.
Note: If nobody started a Zoom recording, the recording cannot be recovered after the meeting ends.
2. Check the cloud recordings trash
If you expect a cloud recording but cannot find it:
- Sign in with the account that hosted the meeting.
- In the navigation menu, click Recordings & Transcripts.
- Click the Trash tab.
Note: If the Trash tab is not available, a Zoom admin may need to enable Enable Trash for Recording and Transcript. - Search by meeting number or date.
- Select the recording and click Recover.
Notes:
- You can only recover a cloud recording if it was deleted within the past 30 days.
- If the account was downgraded to Basic, cloud recordings are deleted after 30 days. Resubscribing to a paid plan within that period restores access; after 30 days, the recordings are permanently deleted and cannot be recovered.
3. Check the computer used for local recording
A recording may have been saved locally instead of to the cloud.
- Sign in to the Zoom desktop app.
- On the top-right, click your profile picture or initials.
- Click Settings.
- Click the Recording tab.
- Under Storage location, then click Open.
- If needed, check the default location:
- Windows: C:\Users\Username\Documents\Zoom
- Mac: /Users/Username/Documents/Zoom
- Linux: /home/Username/Documents/Zoom
- If the recording is not there, check your network drive or contact participants who may have started local recording.
Note: Local recordings exist only on the computer where they were created. Zoom does not retain a copy and cannot recover a lost local recording.
4. If the cloud recording says Processing
If the recording appears in Zoom but remains in Processing:
- Wait up to 24 hours for processing to complete. Longer meetings may require additional processing time.
- If processing has exceeded 48 hours, contact Zoom Support.
5. If a local recording has a conversion error
If the recording was made locally and the conversion did not complete:
- Sign in to the Zoom desktop app.
- Open the local recording directory.
- Look for .zoom conversion files.
- Double-click double_click_to_convert_01.zoom and double_click_to_convert_02.zoom to manually start conversion.
6. Check for third-party recording applications
A third-party AI notetaker can display a recording notification even when Zoom itself is not recording.
- Review the meeting participants for AI notetakers or other recording applications.
- If a third-party service recorded the meeting, contact that service's owner or admin to obtain the recording.
- For future meetings, verify that Zoom's native recording is active by checking for the red REC indicator.
- If a Zoom recording exists but is missing from a third-party archiving service, contact the service's owner or admin.
7. Check cloud storage capacity
If cloud recording was disabled because the account reached its storage limit:
- Sign in to the Zoom web portal as the account owner or admin.
- In the top-right, click your profile picture or initials, then click Admin Center.
- In the side menu, click Content Management, then Recordings and Transcripts.
- Delete unnecessary recordings to free up storage, or use local recordings as a temporary alternative while the storage issue is resolved.
After storage becomes available, cloud recording will automatically be re-enabled for users.
Note: Learn more about managing cloud recording storage.
8. Prevent future missing recordings
Account owners and admins can enable automatic recording before scheduling future meetings to help prevent important meetings from being missed.
- Sign in to the Zoom web portal.
- In the top-right, click your profile picture or initials, then click Admin Center.
- In the side menu, click Settings, then Recordings and Transcripts.
- Enable Automatic recording.
- Select Record to computer or Record in the cloud.
- If required, click the Lock icon to enforce the setting.
- Click Save.
Note: Automatic recording applies to meetings scheduled after the feature is enabled. Existing meetings and Personal Meeting IDs must be configured individually.
9. Address special cases
- Multiple simultaneous meetings: Use generated Meeting IDs instead of Personal Meeting IDs to avoid routing conflicts.
- Network problems: Test connection stability using Zoom's Network Connectivity Tool before important meetings.
- Mobile device hosting: Local recording is not supported on mobile devices. Use the desktop app for local recording, or use cloud recording on mobile when the account is licensed and cloud recording is enabled.
- Recording access: By default, only the host can access cloud recordings. Contact the meeting host if you do not have access.
- Institutional archiving: If your organization automatically transfers recordings to an archiving system such as Panopto, check with your IT department.
