Understanding question types for surveys, polls, and quizzes

Surveys, polls, and quizzes have different question types available. Each type has its own intended purpose and configuration options. 

Types of questions

After you create a survey, poll, or quiz, you can choose from the following question types:

Single choice

Use the single-choice format if you want the participant to answer with only one choice.

  1. Click Untitled Question to enter your question.
  2. Click Choice 1 to enter the first answer. Click Choice 2 to enter the second answer if necessary.
    (Optional) Click + Add choice, then click Choice 3 to enter the new answer; repeat to add as many choices as needed.
  3. (Optional) Additional customization options include:
  4. (Optional) Click + Add Question to add another question.

Multiple choice

Use the multiple-choice format if you want the participant to answer with one or more options.

  1. Click Untitled Question to enter your question.
  2. Click Choice 1 to enter the first answer. Click Choice 2 to enter the second answer if necessary.
    (Optional) Click + Add choice, then click Choice 3 to enter the new answer; repeat to add as many choices as needed.
  3. (Optional) Additional customization options include:

Matching

Use the matching format if you want the participant to match prompts with possible answers.

  1. Click Untitled Question to enter your question.
  2. Click Prompt 1 to enter the first prompt. Click Prompt 2 and Prompt 3 to enter the others, if necessary.
    (Optional) Click + Add choice, then click Prompt 4 to enter the new prompt; repeat to add as many choices as needed.
  3. Click Answer 1 to enter the first possible answer. Click Answer 2 and Answer 3 to enter the others, if necessary.
    (Optional) Click + Add answer, then click Answer 4 to enter the new answer; repeat to add as many choices as needed.
  4. (Optional) Additional customization options include:

Rank Order

Use the rank order format if you want the participant to rank answers using rows and columns.

  1. Click Untitled Question to enter your question.
  2. Click Row 1 to enter the first row choice. Click Row 2 and Row 3 to enter the others, if necessary.
    (Optional) Click + Add row, then click Row 4 to enter the new row; repeat to add as many choices as needed.
  3. Click Column 1 to enter the first column choice. Click Column 2 and Column 3 to enter the others, if necessary.
    (Optional) Click + Add column, then click Column 4 to enter the new column; repeat to add as many choices as needed.

Short Answer

Use the short answer format if you want the participant to answer with a written response.

  1. Click Untitled Question to enter your question.
  2. In the Min Character box, enter a number or click the arrows to select the minimum character number required for the answer.
  3. In the Max Character box, enter a number or click the arrows to select the maximum character number allowed for the answer.
  4. (Optional) Additional customization options include:

Long answer

Use the long answer format if you want the participant to answer with a written response.

  1. Click Untitled Question to enter your question.
  2. In the Min Character box, enter a number or click the arrows to select the minimum character number required for the answer.
  3. In the Max Character box, enter a number or click the arrows to select the maximum character number allowed for the answer.
  4. (Optional) Additional customization options include:

Fill in the blank

Use the fill in the blank format if you want the participant to complete a phrase or sentence.

  1. Click Untitled Question to enter your question. Position your question text around the <blank 1> text so that your participants have something to fill in. 
  2. (Optional) Click + Add blank to add another blank space to your phrase or sentence.
  3. (Optional) Additional customization options include:

Rating scale

Use the rating-scale format if you want the participant to answer with a value between a range of numbers.

  1. Click Untitled Question to enter your question.
  2. In the Score from box, enter a number or click the arrows to select the number that the range should start from.
  3. In the To box, enter a number or click the arrows to select the number that the range should end on.
  4. (Optional) Click the Low score label, then enter what the lowest value represents.
  5. (Optional) Click the High score label, then enter what the highest value represents.
  6. (Optional) Additional customization options include:
