What is meeting chat before and after the meeting?

This feature allows meeting participants to communicate before, during, and after a meeting by creating a dedicated group chat in Zoom Chat for all invited participants. When enabled, in-meeting chats, reactions, files, and images appear in the group chat as they are sent, allowing conversations to continue even after the meeting ends.

Participants who join the meeting ad hoc (not invited through the initial calendar invitation) can chat as usual during the meeting. How will meeting chat before and after the meeting improve collaboration?

Customers have long asked for the ability to more easily chat before a meeting and have access to in-meeting chats after a meeting. Now, users that are not able to be in a meeting will still be able to view the in-meeting chat to keep a pulse on the conversation. The functionality is also bi-directional, meaning that participants can also send messages in the Chat group chat if they’re running late, and those messages will show up in the in-meeting chat. These are just two examples of how this functionality will improve collaboration in and out of meetings.

When does the group chat get created?

The meeting group chat is created when one of two things occur:

Will a group chat still be created if no messages are sent before or during the meeting?

No, if no messages are sent, there will be no dedicated group chat created.

How do I tell group chats and meeting chats apart? Where can I find the dedicated group chat?

The meeting chat will appear in Chat in the left sidebar as a group chat with the same name as your meeting and will have a calendar icon to indicate that this is a meeting chat. Recurring meeting chats have the recurring icon .

Finding your dedicated group chat depends on your Chat settings. If you have your Chats and Channels sections organized by section, these group chats will show up under a new section named Meeting Chats. If Chats and Channels are not separated, your meeting chats will appear in order of recency just as your other chats.

Do recurring meetings get one group chat or group chats for every meeting?

Recurring meetings will only have one group chat for the recurring series of meetings, ensuring the conversation is accessible throughout the series.

If I call someone for an instant meeting, will a dedicated group chat be created in Chat?

No, this functionality only works for scheduled, non-PMI meetings.

How does this work for scheduled 1:1 meetings? Do the in-meeting chats follow into our direct 1:1 chat in Chat?

A dedicated group chat will be created for 1:1 meetings if the meeting chat before and after the meeting feature is enabled. This chat is separate from your existing 1:1 chat.

Will my private in-meeting chats be shared to a group chat?

No, messages sent privately in a meeting will not show up in the dedicated group chat in Chat.

Would the chats combine if the same people had a meeting at a later date?

No, each meeting (other than recurring meetings) will generate an unique chat group, regardless of if the participants are the same.

Can all invitees and in-meeting participants access the dedicated group chat in Chat?

All internal users originally invited to the meeting will be able to access the dedicated group chat before and after the meeting.

External invitees can still participate in the meeting chat and see chat history from the moment they join, but they won’t see the history of the chat prior to them joining or after the meeting ends. The host can manually add them to the dedicated chat group at any time, if their account and chat settings allow external participants to join group chats.

Guest participants, which are any participants invited to the live meeting by either sharing the link or invited directly, will be able to send messages and see other messages sent during the meeting from the moment they join, but are unable to load messages from before joining, including those sent in the group chat before the meeting started. Their messages will be included in the group chat, but they will not be able to access the group chat outside of the meeting, until the group chat admin manually adds them to the dedicated chat group.

Can I add people to the group chat even if they weren't on the meeting invite?

Yes, you can add others to the group who didn't attend the meeting or were not part of the original invitation, but it’s best to add them to the meeting invite if you want them to have access to both the meeting and the group chat.

After the meeting ends, the host will have the option to add internal participants to the group chat, if they were present in the meeting but were not included in the initial invitation.

Can I control which meetings I’d like to turn this on for?

Yes, when enabled in your Settings, this will be an additional option available when scheduling a meeting through the Zoom desktop app, mobile app, web scheduler, or Zoom Calendar. By unchecking the Allow users to access meeting chats before and after the meeting box, no dedicated group chat will be created for this meeting.

Can I disable this feature for all of my meetings?

Yes, this feature can be enabled or disabled from a user’s web settings. Learn more about enabling or disabling meeting chat before and after the meeting.

I have meetings set up before this feature was made available. Will they automatically get the new functionality now that it has been enabled?

No, older meetings set up before the functionality was made available will not automatically get this functionality, but it can be easily added. After the host enables this web setting, they can then edit the meeting and enable the Allow users to access meeting chats before and after the meeting option. After saving the meeting with the setting enabled, all current invitees will be able to access the dedicated group chat, as described above.
