Getting started with Intelligent Director
Intelligent Director uses Zoom’s software AI to select the best view of in-room participants from multiple camera sources, increasing the potential clarity and resolution of the video streams displayed in the meeting. Once configured, Intelligent Director analyzes data from multiple cameras to select and display the best camera angle of participants located in the Zoom Room.

How Intelligent Director handles data
Once a Zoom Room is set-up, Intelligent Director analyzes data from the multiple cameras to select and display the best camera angle of participants in that Zoom Room. Data to distinguish the video streams of people in the Zoom Room is temporarily stored during the Zoom meeting and processed on the Zoom Room equipment. The data is not used to identify any specific person in the Zoom Room, is not retained by Zoom, and is deleted after the meeting ends.
How to enable Intelligent Director
Enable on web portal
- Sign in to the Zoom web portal.
- Click Room Management then click Zoom Rooms.
- You can use location hierarchy to enable this setting for a specific room or location. Click Account Settings to enable it for the entire account.
- Scroll to the Devices section and click the toggle next to Allow Intelligent Director Mode.
- Click Enable on the prompt window.
- (Optional) To make the Allow Intelligent Director Mode feature mandatory for all rooms, click the lock icon .
- (Optional) To make Intelligent Director Mode the default camera mode for when the meeting starts, find the Default Camera Control Mode section and select Intelligent Director Mode.
Enable on the Zoom Room controller
- Tap Settings on the Zoom Rooms controller or touch screen display.
- Tap Camera.
- Ensure you have the correct Main Camera selected.
- Under the Intelligent Director heading, toggle additional cameras as desired.
- Calibrate Intelligent Director to complete the setup.
How to calibrate Intelligent Director
Calibration is a one-time initialization process that improves the overall performance of Intelligent Director. Re-calibration is only necessary if the system is factory reset or camera positions are moved.
- Tap Settings on the Zoom Rooms controller or touch screen display.
- Tap Camera.
- Find the Intelligent Director (Uncalibrated) section, and tap Calibrate.
- Adjust your camera positions, set presets for each camera, then tap Next.
Note: We recommend referencing the example room layouts and accompanying diagrams in Best practices for Intelligent Director, for suggested camera positions and area of interest regions to focus upon. Each camera should be zoomed in as much as possible but still retain view of the area that needs to be covered. - Tap Start, and move around the room to calibrate.
- Once these steps are complete, you should see the Successful Calibration window. Tap Done to finish.
- (Optional) Follow steps 1-2 and tap Recalibrate if you need to change the calibration settings.
Notes:
- If there is only one participant in the room, then Intelligent Director will send only one stream with the best angle among the three cameras.
- When a user switches the main camera to a camera that is not physically in the center of the room, the system will be considered uncalibrated. If the user wants to keep the new main camera, the room will need to be recalibrated. Alternatively, the user can switch back to the old camera, without making changes, and the system will still be calibrated based on the original settings.
How to use Intelligent Director in a meeting
- Start or join a meeting from the Zoom Rooms controller or touch screen display.
- Tap the Camera Control icon.
- Tap Intelligent Director, then tap the icon to close the window.
- (Optional) If you want to skip these steps and make Intelligent Director the default camera mode for all the room's meetings, change the setting on the web portal.
How to use Intelligent Director with a standalone camera
Two or three Intelligent Director cameras can be used with one additional stand-alone camera. The additional stand-alone camera can be used with any camera mode supported by the hardware: Manual (including default preset), Speaker Focus, Auto framing, or Multi-focus.
- Enable multi-camera mode.
- Configure your camera controls from your room controller or touch display.
Troubleshooting
- Unprocessed individual camera view(s) are displayed
Ensure Intelligent Director Camera Control Mode is selected on the Zoom Rooms controller and that desired cameras have been selected on the controllers camera settings. - Performance is not as expected
Check the Zoom Rooms controller to make sure that the system has been Calibrated. Use supported cameras for the best results. - Calibration Failed
Review any error message and follow up instructions. If necessary, review your camera configurations and/or reposition the cameras. Ensure that only one person is detected during calibration. - Multi-Camera mode
Intelligent Director cannot be set at the Default Camera Control Mode if the cameras are set as default for Multi-Camera Mode. - Send problem report to Zoom
You can send a problem report to Zoom if further troubleshooting is required. An image of each preset position will be saved and included in any problem reports submitted.
