Bring your own device (BYOD) for Zoom Rooms


Bring your own device (BYOD) mode for Zoom Rooms allows you to use the camera, microphone, speakers, and other hardware of your room system with another device, such as a laptop. For example, you may want to join a meeting with a third party UC platform on a laptop using the Zoom Room’s devices as peripherals, or use an application on a laptop to make a local recording. Using BYOD mode is not required for these activities, but it provides a versatile set of options that allows you to take advantage of the camera, speakers and microphone of your Zoom Room system.

Prerequisites for using BYOD mode in Zoom Rooms

*Note: Using Logitech and and Neat devices for BYOD mode changes the Zoom Room's status to offline. All other devices in BYOD mode leave the Zoom Room online and the application running in the background. 

Limitations

When BYOD mode is in use, the following features are inactive: meeting alerts, ZR digital signage emergency notifications, incoming calls (meetings or phone calls), auto meeting start, room check in notifications, direct share, proximity detection, device operation time, and voice commands.

How to allow BYOD mode

Note: This feature is enabled by default. 

  1. Sign in to the Zoom web portal as an admin.
  2. Click Room Management, then Zoom Rooms.
  3. You can use location hierarchy to enable this feature for specific rooms, locations or the account. For this example, click Account Settings.
  4. Under Device Management, click the Allow users to use Zoom Rooms BYOD through a USB connection toggle to enable or disable the feature.
  5. If a verification dialog displays, click Enable or Disable to verify the change.
  6. (Optional) To prevent all users in your account from changing this setting, click the lock icon , and then click Lock to confirm the setting.

How to enable the BYOD mode connection prompt

This feature is enabled by default. Follow these steps if it has been disabled or if you don't see a BYOD prompt appear when you connect your device. 

  1. Sign in to the Zoom web portal as an admin.
  2. Click Room Management, then Zoom Rooms.
  3. You can use location hierarchy to enable this feature for specific rooms, locations or the account. For this example, click Account Settings.
  4. Under Device Management, click the BYOD Connection Prompt toggle to enable it.
  5. If a verification dialog displays, click Enable to verify the change.
  6. (Optional) To prevent all users in your account from changing this setting, click the lock icon , and then click Lock to confirm the setting.

How to start BYOD mode in Zoom Rooms

Poly devices

  1. Plug in your laptop or other device with a USB connection to the Zoom Rooms Poly appliance.
    The following prompt will appear on your controller or touch display: Switch to BYOD passthrough?
  2. Tap Switch.
  3. You can use the room system's camera, microphone and speakers from your computer. To change the settings for these devices use the room controller or touch screen display. 
  4. Perform the activity you planned with the room system's hardware. 
  5. To end BYOD mode, click Switch to Zoom Room on your controller or Exit on your touch display. Alternatively, disconnect the USB cable and wait for the room system to revert to the Zoom Rooms application automatically.

Crestron devices

USB-A cable

  1. Plug in your laptop or other device with a USB-A cable to the Crestron device.
  2. The following prompt will appear on your controller or touch display: Switch to BYOD passthrough?
  3. Tap Switch on the touch display or Start on the room controller.
  4. The display will briefly show the message In BYOD Mode.
  5. To control the room system's camera, microphone or speakers use your laptop (or other device) interface or use the interface of another application (ex: Microsoft Teams). 
  6. Perform the activity you planned with the room system's hardware. 
  7. To end BYOD mode, disconnect the USB-A cable and wait for the room system to revert to the Zoom Rooms application automatically.
    The display will briefly show the message You have exited BYOD mode

USB-C cable

  1. Plug in your laptop or other device with a USB-C cable to the Crestron device.
  2. You will see a prompt for choosing between BYOD Mode or Screen Share. Tap Start under BYOD Mode.
  3. The display will briefly show the message In BYOD Mode.
  4. To control the room system's camera, microphone or speakers use your laptop (or other device) interface or use the interface of another application (ex: Microsoft Teams). 
  5. Perform the activity you planned with the room system's hardware. 
  6. To end BYOD mode, disconnect the USB-C cable and wait for the room system to revert to the Zoom Rooms application automatically.
    The display will briefly show the message You have exited BYOD mode

DTEN D7X

  1. Plug in your laptop or other device with a USB-C cable to the DTEN device.
  2. You will see a prompt for choosing between BYOD Mode or Screen Share. Tap Start under BYOD Mode.
  3. The display will briefly show the message In BYOD Mode.
  4. To control the room system's camera, microphone or speakers use your laptop (or other device) interface or use the interface of another application (ex: Microsoft Teams). 
  5. Perform the activity you planned with the room system's hardware. 
  6. To end BYOD mode, disconnect the USB-C cable and wait for the room system to revert to the Zoom Rooms application automatically.
