Advance notice of end of support for Zoom Rooms Controller on iOS 8 and iOS 9

Zoom strives to provide frictionless and secure video communications empowering people to accomplish more.  As part of our commitments to quality and security, the upcoming release of Zoom Rooms Controller for iPad, version 5.10, will remove support for Apple iOS 8.x and 9.x.

Apple devices running Apple iOS 8.x and 9.x will be unable to upgrade to or install Zoom Rooms Controller for iPad version 5.10 and subsequent versions. There are no exceptions possible; Apple App Store policies will prevent iPads running iOS 9.x or earlier from upgrading to, or installing Zoom Rooms Controller for iPad 5.10 and subsequent versions.

The end of Zoom Rooms Controller for iPad support for iOS 8.x and 9.x especially affects the following iPad models, which cannot upgrade past iOS 9.3.6:

Background information

Historically, Zoom supported the use of the Zooms Room Controller for iPad on iOS versions 8.x and greater.  Due to the lack of continuing operating system and security updates for iPad 8 and iOS 9 from Apple (last updated August 2015 and July 2019, respectively), we must terminate our support for these operating systems in the interest of supporting new application features made possible by newer iOS releases and security concerns.  The aforementioned iPad models cannot upgrade to iOS versions newer than 9.3.6, therefore they will not be supported starting with new Zoom Rooms Controller for iPad releases, starting with Zoom Rooms Controller for iPad version 5.10.

Zoom Rooms Controller version 5.10 Release Timeline

Zoom released Zoom Rooms Controller for iPad version 5.10 in April, 2022. The application (and, subsequently, newer versions) is available via the Apple App Store. iPad models capable of running versions of iOS 10.x or greater will be able to upgrade to Zoom Rooms Controller 5.10 and beyond; Zoom recommends running the latest iOS and the latest version of the Zoom Rooms Controller app that your device supports.

How can I check the iOS version of my deployed iPad(s)?

Verify the current iOS version from the Zoom admin portal by following these steps:

  1. Sign in to the Zoom web portal.
  2. Click Device Management then Device List.
  3. Change the top left filter from All Platform OS to iOS.
  4. Review your devices, including Device Name and Zoom Room Assignment.
  5. (Optional) click Export to export a list of your devices to a .CSV file for further processing.

How can I check if I have an iPad that cannot upgrade beyond iOS 9.3.6?

See Identify your iPad Model on Apple’s support website and compare the hardware model to the list of hardware models in the table above.

What does this mean for iPads that cannot upgrade past iOS 9.3.6?

These iPad models will be blocked from installing Zoom Rooms Controller for iPad version 5.10. The devices can continue to use Zoom Rooms Controller for iPad version 5.9.3. However, should any disruption occur that causes you to uninstall the app, or factory reset your device (therefore erasing the app), you will not be able to download Zoom Rooms Controller for iPad version 5.9.3 from the Apple AppStore to reinstall.

Can I continue to use Zoom Rooms Controller for iPad version 5.9.3 on my iPad?

Zoom Rooms iPad Controller version 5.9.3, the last version offering support for iOS 8 and 9, was initially planned to reach end of support on October 9th, 2022. This date has been extended: Zoom Rooms iPad Controller version 5.9.3 will continue to function until Zoom's Software Quarterly Lifecycle Policy requires a minimum version above 5.9.3. After that date, Zoom Rooms iPad Controller versions 5.9.3 and earlier will stop operating on iPads running iOS 8 and 9. A notification message will appear instructing the administrator to upgrade the iPad’s iOS or transition to an alternative hardware platform as soon as possible. Please monitor Zoom's Software Quarterly Lifecycle Policy to remain aware of upcoming enforcement dates and minimum required versions.

What steps should I take to prepare for this change?

Zoom recommends examining iPads deployed as Zoom Room Controllers, Zoom Scheduling Displays or Zoom Rooms for Touch devices in your Zoom account to determine the device models in your deployment.  Zoom then recommends the following course of action, based on device capabilities:
