Verifying tax exemption status

To comply with various U.S. state and local sales tax law requirements, Zoom Communications, Inc. collects sales and other applicable taxes. The amount and type of tax collected depends on your location, the type of products/services purchased, and the applicable rules of the state and local jurisdiction. If you have a certificate of tax exemption, please follow the instructions below to submit your exemption documentation.

How to submit a tax exemption certificate

New customer

If you're a new Zoom customer, you can submit your tax exemption certificate by selecting Verify Now where Tax Exempt? Verify Now appears under the Address section of the Checkout page of your purchase. 

  1. On the Checkout page, under the Address section, click Verify Now next to Tax Exempt?.
    A new window will open to complete the tax exemption certificate submission.
  2. Complete the steps in the exemption certificate portal to submit your tax exemption certificate.
    You will be prompted to enter your tax information, select the applicable reason for exemption, upload your certificate, and provide an electronic signature to complete the tax exemption certificate submission. Depending upon your jurisdiction, your certificate may be approved automatically or, in some cases, require further review. If additional review is required, once approved, you will automatically receive a refund of taxes paid that are covered under your exemption certificate. 
    Note: Federal and State Universal Service Fund fees, which are regulated telecommunication fees on Zoom Phone services, are not eligible for exemption. 

Existing customer

If you're an existing Zoom customer, you can submit your tax exemption certificate through the Zoom web portal. Follow the steps below depending on where your billing portal is located in the left navigation menu of the Zoom web portal. Not sure how to identify where your billing portal is located? Billing portal under Plans and Billing
  1. Sign in to the Zoom web portal as the account owner, admin, or custom role with billing privileges.
  2. In the navigation menu, click Plans and Billing then Billing Management.
  3. In the Contact Information section, click Edit.
  4. Click Verify Now at the bottom of the section where Tax Exempt? Verify Now appears.
  5. A window will open to complete the tax exemption certificate submission.
  6. Complete the steps in the exemption certificate portal to submit your tax exemption certificate.
  7. Depending upon your jurisdiction, your certificate may be approved automatically or, in some cases, require further review. You may be charged tax on any orders placed while your tax exemption status is pending review. If additional review is required, once approved, you will automatically receive a credit of all refundable taxes paid that are covered under your exemption certificate to your account. 
    • Federal and State Universal Service Fund fees, which are regulated telecommunication fees on Zoom Phone services, are not eligible for exemption. 
    • Under current state tax law, if your “sold-to” address is in Delaware or Oregon, there is no need to submit any exemption documentation as no sales taxes will be charged.
Billing portal under Account Management
  1. Sign in to the Zoom web portal as the account owner, admin, or custom role with billing privileges.
  2. In the navigation menu, click Account Management then Billing.
  3. Click the Billing Information tab.
  4. In the Sold To Contact section, to the right of Tax Status, click Edit.
  5. Click Verify Now next to Tax Exempt?
    A window will open to complete the tax exemption certificate submission.
  6. Complete the steps in the exemption certificate portal to submit your tax exemption certificate.
  7. Depending upon your jurisdiction, your certificate may be approved automatically or, in some cases, require further review. You may be charged tax on any orders placed while your tax exemption status is pending review. If additional review is required, once approved, you will automatically receive a credit of all refundable taxes paid that are covered under your exemption certificate to your account.

Understanding tax status

If you submitted a valid tax exemption certificate, your Tax Status will update to Exempt.

Certain tax exemption certificates require our tax experts to review. In these situations, your Tax Status will be Pending. Upon approval of your exemption certificate, all applicable taxes that are eligible for exemption will be refunded or credited to you.
