Updating Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)
Although the VDI client and plugin are backward compatible with certain versions, updating at least periodically provides access to important new features and critical security updates.
This article covers:
Prerequisites for updating Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)
- Administrator access to systems management software
- Existing VDI setup
Installation locations
The VDI client and plugin are two separate programs with their own respective physical install locations:
- The VDI client, known as the host installer, will be installed on the virtual desktop as an application. The host installer is a .msi file that can be deployed through systems management software, such as Intune and SCCM. It will respond to the same .msi configuration as the non-VDI client.
- The VDI plugin will be installed on a thin client. The plugin itself is an enhancement to the VDI host installer that allows a thin client to bridge a connection to the VDI over a .ica or .pcoip connection. This allows for media offloading and reduces the memory and process strain on the VDI server.
The default installation directories are:
- C:\Program Files (x86)\Zoom VDI for the VDI client
- C:\Program Files (x86)\user entered location for the VDI plugin
How to update VDI
- Download the installation file for the preferred update version.
- If you are updating the VDI client and plug-in, then updating both at the same time is recommended. If this can't be done, update the client first then the plug-in.
- Utilize systems management software (SCCM, Intune, etc.) to update the files in the current installation directories. You can use the same software to update registry settings if necessary.
Note: If you are also doing new installations during the update process, make sure that the two components are never installed in the same location.
