Using the new meeting chat experience


The in-meeting chat functionality has expanded to enable stronger communication and improve feature parity between in-meeting chat and Team Chat. Hosts can allow meeting participants to communicate as effectively and efficiently with in-meeting chat, as they do with Team Chat. Participants will be able to delete their messages, reply in threads, quote, format their messages with additional rich text formatting options, preview images directly in the chat thread, capture and send screenshots, and react to messages with emojis.

Prerequisites for using the new meeting chat experience

Note: The ability to delete messages, view in-line image previews, use rich text formatting, take and send screenshots, and quote messages is available as of version 5.12.6, but the entire new meeting chat experience, including threaded replies and emoji reactions, requires 5.13.0 or higher.

How to use the new meeting chat experience

Send a message with rich text formatting

  1. Join a meeting.
  2. In the meeting controls, click Chat .
  3. In the To: drop-down menu, select Everyone (default) or a specific participant in the list.
    Note: Choosing a specific participant will mean the message will be private and only seen by you and the recipient.
  4. Enter your message in the chat window.
    Below the chat compose box, click the format icon  to access the rich text options.
    The following formatting options are available:
    • Bold icon : Bold the highlighted text.
    • Italicize icon / : Italicize the highlighted text.
    • Underline icon : Underline the selected text.
    • Strikethrough icon : Strikethrough the highlighted text.
    • Text color icon : Access both the ability to adjust the color of the text itself and/or the color highlight around the text. The Clear option removes any selected colors and reverts the text to standard black/white formatting.
    • Text size icon : Adjust the size of the font, choosing from Small, Medium, and Large text sizes.
    • Link icon : Insert a link for the highlighted text.
    • Heading icon : Adjust the style of the text, choosing from Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3, and Paragraph.
    • Bulleted list icon : Begin a bulleted list.
    • Numbered list icon : Begin a numbered list.
    • Ellipsis icon : View more rich text formatting options:
      • Increase indent icon : Increase the indent of the selected text.
      • Decrease indent icon : Decrease the indent of the selected text.
      • Quote icon : Create a quote of text.
      • Eraser icon : Clear all formatting of the selected text.
  5. (Optional) Click the smiley icon  to access emojis. Click an emoji to add it to your message.
  6. (Optional) Click the screenshot icon  icon to include a screenshot. Click and drag to capture a portion of the screen.
  7. (Optional) Click the file icon to include a file.
  8. Press Enter or click the send icon  to send your message.

Reply to another message in chat

Instead of sending a new message to everyone, you can also reply to messages already sent by yourself or another participant.

  1. In the meeting controls, click Chat.
  2. Hover your cursor over any sent message.
    Additional options will appear below or to the right of the message bubble.
  3. Click the reply icon .
    A text compose box will appear below and indented to the right slightly, indicating the message will be part of this thread.
  4. Enter your message in the chat window.
    Below the chat compose box, click the format icon  to access additional rich text formatting options.
  5. (Optional) Click the smiley icon  to access emojis. Click an emoji to add it to your message.
  6. (Optional) Click the screenshot icon icon to include a screenshot. Click and drag to capture a portion of the screen
  7. Press Enter or click the send icon  to send your message.

React to a message in meeting chat

  1. In the meeting controls, click Chat .
  2. Hover your cursor over the message you want to react to.
    Additional options will appear to the right of the message.
  3. Click the reaction icon .
    A small box will appear, providing you with your recently used emojis for quick access.
  4. Select a recently used emoji or click the more option  to view the full list of available emojis.
    The selected emoji reaction will appear below the message. Additional emojis can be selected.
  5. (Optional) To remove the reaction, click the emoji that you added to the message.

Send a message with rich text formatting

  1. Join a meeting.
  2. In the meeting controls, tap Chat .
  3. In the To: drop-down menu, select Everyone (default) or a specific participant in the list.

  5. Long-tap to highlight the text you want to format.
    The following formatting options will appear below the text compose box:
    • Bold icon : Bold the highlighted text.
    • Italicize icon / : Italicize the highlighted text.
    • Underline icon : Underline the selected text.
    • Strikethrough icon : Strikethrough the highlighted text.
    • Bulleted list icon : Begin a bulleted list.
    • Numbered list icon : Begin a numbered list.
    • Quote icon : Create a quote of text.
  • (Optional) Tap the smiley icon  to access emojis and GIFs. Tap an emoji to add it to your message.
  • (Optional) Tap the add icon and select file icon  to include a file.
  • Tap the send icon  to send your message.

Reply to another message in chat

  1. In the meeting controls, tap Chat .
    Current chat messages will be listed. Additional options will appear to the right of each message.
  2. To react to a message within a thread, tap the indicator below the message showing how many replies have been added to this message.
  3. Long-tap the message to show additional options and reactions.
  4. Tap a recently used emoji or tap the more option  to view the full list of available emojis.
    The selected emoji reaction will appear below the message. Additional emojis can be selected.
  5. (Optional) To remove the reaction, tap the emoji that you added to the message.
