Release notes for the Zoom client

Changes to existing features

• Version downgrade prevention - Windows
  Both the EXE and MSI installers now prevent downgrading the Zoom app to a lower version than currently installed. Additionally, only one instance of the publicly available Zoom app can be installed locally. Version downgrades through MSI can be allowed through the AllowDowngrade MSI-policy.
• RecordingFilePath (GPO) support for Windows System Variables - Windows
  The RecordingFilePath setting can accept Windows System Variables, such as %appdata% or %username%. This allows admins to set a custom recording location, based on the local user profile. This is only supported with GPO and ZDM.

  • Additional MSI/PLIST/GPO/MDM options
    • Disable Webinar Resources - DisableSidecar - Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS
      Disabled by default, this option allows admins to disable the use and visibility of Webinar Resources, which provides webinar hosts with the ability to link to external resources, such as newsletter sign-ups, learn more pages, and others.
    • Download and install VDI auto-update plugin - InstallVDIAutoUpdatePlugin - Windows (MSI only)
      Enabled by default, when a VDI environment is detected, the ZoomPluginAutoUpdateService.dll is installed so that VDI auto-update is available for use.
    • Support for Windows Extended Protection - EnableWinExtendProtectedAuth - Windows
      Disabled by default, this allows the client to support Windows Extended Protection with NTLM authentication.
    • Disable the notification when a cloud recording is available - NotifyCMRAvailable - WIndows, macOS, Linux
      Enabled by default, this allows admins to disable the desktop client setting Show notifications when a new recording is available.
    • Set post processing of video rendering - SetVideoRenderingPostProcessing - Windows
      Set to Auto (0) by default, admins can adjust the Video Rendering Post Processing setting found under the Advanced section of the desktop client Video settings. Admins can also choose to enable (1) or disable (2) video rendering post processing.
    • Set method video capture - SetVideoCapturingMethod - Windows
      Set to Auto (0) by default, admins can adjust the Video Capturing Method setting found under the Advanced section of the desktop client Video settings. Admins can also choose Direct Show (1) or Media Foundation (2) for the capture method.
  • Support for Zoom Mesh - Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS
    The Zoom client supports the use of Zoom Mesh within a local network, reducing internet bandwidth used by attendees when connecting with Zoom servers for Zoom Webinars and Events. This requires version 5.13.0 or higher.
  • End of support for iOS 10 and below - iOS
    With this release, iOS users will need to be on iOS 11 or higher to continue to receive additional Zoom app updates. Devices still using iOS 10 or below will have 5.12.9 (5692) as the most recent version available.
  • End of support for Android 5 and below - Android
    In an upcoming release, Android users will need to be on Android 6 or later to continue to receive additional Zoom app updates. Users potentially affected by this will receive notifications in the app, informing them of the upcoming change and encouraging them to update to the appropriate Android version.
• Meeting/webinar features
  • Additional annotation discoverability - Windows, macOS, Linux
    When viewing shared content, an additional toggle is available in the bottom-left corner of the shared content, making the annotations toolbar more easily accessible. This additional toggle for annotations is in addition to the existing entry point under View Options.
  • Speaker attributions for live automated captions - Windows, macOS, Linux
    When viewing automated captions in a live meeting or webinar, captions will include the speaker’s profile picture as part of captions, to make it easier to understand who is currently speaking. If the user has no profile picture, their initials will be displayed instead. Their full name is provided when viewing the full transcript. Previously, there was no speaker attribution in the displayed captions. This also includes other minor caption enhancements to better support multiple speakers.
  • Temporarily disable automated captions - Windows, macOS, Linux
    Hosts can disable automated captioning during a live meeting or webinar. This can be useful when the host forgets to disable captions from the web settings and wants to disable them for a meeting. Participants will be notified that captions are disabled by the host and the Show Captions button is no longer available in the control toolbar for everyone except the host.
  • Meeting and webinar countdown timer - Windows, macOS, Linux
    Meeting participants and webinar panelists can choose to display how much time is left in a scheduled session. This timer is based on the scheduled duration and changes to a warming gold color after reaching 5 minutes remaining. Previously, participants could only choose to view the current duration of the meeting.
  • Slide control enhancement for persistent assignments - Windows, macOS
    Participants assigned slide control during a meeting or webinar session will continue to have slide control, even after sharing is stopped and restarted. Previously, slide control assignments were reset when sharing was stopped.
  • Dimmed video if flashing images or patterns detected - Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS
    Users can enable an option under Accessibility settings that allows the Zoom app to detect flashing images or patterns and automatically dim the video in a meeting or webinar.
  • Creation and editing of polls directly in meetings and webinars - Windows, macOS, Linux
    Hosts and co-hosts can create and edit polls during a meeting or webinar. Previously, creating and editing a poll launched the web portal, for changes to be made there. For MacOS users, this feature requires macOS version 10.12 or higher. 
• Meeting features
  • Support for Q&A in meetings - Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS
    Hosts can enable the Q&A feature in meetings to allow participants to ask questions, which can be viewed by all, but only answered by the host and co-host. Questions can be submitted anonymously, and responses can be sent publicly for all to see or privately to just the sender. Hosts can also mark submitted questions as something that will be answered live, so participants are aware and can expect their answer to follow soon. This is currently only available for standard Business, Zoom One Business, Zoom One Business Plus, Zoom One Enterprise, and Zoom One Enterprise Plus accounts, with standard Enterprise accounts currently scheduled to follow on January 7, 2023.
  • Animated meeting reactions - Windows, macOS, Android, iOS
    Reactions shown in each video tile can be animated to draw greater attention. These animations are controlled through client settings, as well controlled by admins at the Account level settings. 
  • Enhanced broadcasting notification - Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS
    When the host begins broadcasting their voice to all open breakout rooms, indicators that they are currently live are more prominent and clear. This includes the breakout rooms window where the host initiates the broadcast, as well as the broadcasting notification in the top-left corner of the video window.
  • Enhanced join flow - Windows, macOS, Linux
    The process of joining a meeting is enhanced to combine the Please wait for the host to start this meeting window and the Waiting Room window together. This new join flow requires version 5.12.0 or higher and is only available for meetings hosted by Free accounts initially. This will be available for additional paid account types in mid-January 2023.
• Team Chat features
  • Schedule meeting with chat and channel members - Windows, macOS, Linux
    Users can schedule meetings with members of a chat channel directly from Team Chat. When successfully scheduled, the meeting is added to your calendars, provides a notification with the option to copy the invitation, and also appears as a meeting card in the chat. This feature requires all chat members to have their calendars integrated with Zoom, and currently supports Google Calendar and Office 365 (OAuth 2.0). This setting is available at the account and group levels.
  • Mention groups - Windows, macOS, Android, iOS
    The chat channel owner or admins can create custom mention groups of users, which are all tagged when that group is @ mentioned. Up to 100 members can be assigned to a mention group, with members able to leave the group at any time. Channels support up to 10 different mention groups, but group mentions only work in the channel they were created in.
  • Delete messages in channels you own/admin - Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS
    Channel owners and other designated admins can delete messages sent by other users in that channel. Previously, messages could only be deleted by the sender themselves.
  • Configurable text compose box shortcuts - Windows, macOS, Android, iOS
    The toolbar of shortcuts at the bottom of the chat compose box can be customized both in terms of the order of icons as well as which options are currently visible. Customizations affect the main chat compose box for the chat group/channel, as well as the chat compose box as a reply to a message. Since the visibility of voice messages, video messages, and code snippet options can be controlled here, the corresponding options on the Team Chat tab of client settings are removed. 
  • Updated chat notification settings - Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS
    Settings for controlling chat notifications are updated for clarity and ease of use. These updates affect the Team Chat tab of the client settings, the channel info panel, and the more menu for each channel in the chat sidebar.
  • Search for SMS messages - Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS
    The Search bar supports searching SMS messages you have sent and received. Additional search filters are also available for SMS messages. Narrow your search down to specific phone numbers or conversations with the From and Search in filters, while the Type filter can narrow the search to SMS messages only.
  • Enhanced GIF control - Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS
    When viewing a sent GIF image in a chat or channel, there will be the option to pause/play the GIF.
  • Increased member limit for public channels to 50k - Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS
    The limit of members in a public Team Chat channel can be increased to 50,000 per channel. Currently, the limit is 15,000 per channel. This feature must be enabled by Zoom and your account must be provisioned in the US01 cluster.
• Zoom Mail and Calendar
  • Spell check for Mail Client - Windows, macOS
    The Zoom Mail Client can utilize the system’s built-in spell checking functionality to check emails you draft in the client.
• Phone features
  • Support for more than 1000 imported contacts - Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS
    When contacts are uploaded by admins, these contacts are found by using the search bar or phone dialer. Searching contacts supports as many contacts as were uploaded. Previously, only up to 1000 imported contacts were searchable.
  • Display end-of-call experience feedback survey - Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS
    Account owners and admins can display a thumbs up/down survey at the end of each call. If participants respond with thumbs down, they can provide additional information about what went wrong. 
• Contact Center features
  • Show variables in active engagements - Windows, macOS
    When configuring variables, account owners and admins can enable an option to display the variable in the Zoom desktop client. If enabled, the variable will display in the inbound notification and the Profile or Engagement tab during active engagements. This feature must be enabled by Zoom.
  • Enhancements to engagement sidebar - Windows, macOS
    If the agent was invited to an engagement through transfer or conference, it will appear in the Conference section while the engagement is being handled by the assigned agent. Previously, all active engagements appeared in the Active section for invitees.
  • Invite another user to a video engagement - Windows, macOS
    Agents can invite another contact center user to the active video engagement.
  • Monitor video engagements - Windows, macOS
    Supervisors can use the Active engagements tab to view active video engagements. When viewing a video engagement, all other parties in the video engagement will not be aware the supervisor is viewing.
  • Change agents status - Windows, macOS
    Supervisors can manually change the status of an agent and add a Not Ready reason by using the Teams page in the Zoom desktop client. Agents will receive a notification when their status is changed by a supervisor.
  • Enhancements to engagement information in Zoom desktop client - Windows, macOS
    There are several enhancements to engagement information displayed in the Zoom desktop client:
    • Agents can view additional details of global custom variables displayed during an engagement.
    • Agents can click URLs to launch them in a web browser if the URL link is provided in a variable.
  • Hold/un-hold support for USB HID headsets - Windows, macOS
    Agents can use supported USB HID headset to hold or un-hold voice engagements.
  • Display caller ID name for inbound voice calls - Windows, macOS
    Agents will see the calling party’s caller ID name when receiving an inbound voice engagement or when another agent transfers a voice engagement to them. If the calling party doesn’t have a caller ID name, the matching address book entry will display.
  • Transfer to flow - Windows, macOS
    Agents can transfer a voice engagement to a flow so that the consumer can be provided with a flow experience before reaching another queue or agent.
  • Invite another user to a voice engagement - Windows, macOS
    Agents can invite another user to the active voice engagement using Warm Conference. The user can be a Zoom Contact Center user or queue, Zoom Phone user, or external phone number. There can be a maximum of 10 participants in an active voice engagement.
  • Barge or listen in on voice conference - Windows, macOS
    Supervisors can barge or listen in on an active voice conference engagement. The assigned agent will be notified that the supervisor is barging or listening in on the engagement.
  • View flow history - Windows, macOS
    Supervisors can use the Active engagements table to see the relevant flows that engagements have been routed through.

  The Zoom Outlook plugin now supports Dutch language. By default, Zoom will match the operating system’s language if supported and users can manually select a language of their choice.

Release notes for Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)

Note: This release for VDI has been delayed 1 day, to December 20, 2022.

Changes to existing features

• Add VDI plugin auto-update software to standard client installer and updates
  When either Citrix Workspace or VMware Horizon is detected, users will be prompted to install an additional package for Zoom VDI auto-update software during an update of the standard Windows Zoom Meeting client.
• Remove requirement for user account control (UAC) for VDI Client AutoUpgrade
  VDI client auto upgrade will not require admin authorization for end users, and the UAC dialogue box will not be displayed when upgrading to later releases. In previous releases, the UAC dialog was displayed during a VDI client auto upgrade.
  Note: This change only affects future updates. The UAC dialog will still be displayed when updating from an older release. The change was added to release 5.12.7 and once that release or a subsequent release has been installed (such as 5.13.0) future updates will not display the UAC dialog during auto-update.
• Disable Webinar Breakout Rooms for VDI
  This feature has been disabled for VDI and will be added in a future release. This feature is also not available for VDI client builds in either fallback mode or when running without a remote connection.
• Production Studio UI for VDI client
  The VDI client supports this feature when the VDI client is run as a viewer. For hosts, Production Studio is supported when the VDI client runs in fallback mode; the host feature is not available when a plugin is connected.

New and enhanced features

• Countdown timer
  Users can keep track of how much time is left in a scheduled meeting. Both hosts and participants can display the remaining time in a meeting.
• Enhancements to the Later option for VDI Plugin Auto-Update
  For administrators concerned about forcing users to disconnect, an additional policy, a registry key called UpdatePluginLater, can be configured. This policy provides the option for the user to see and click a button called “Later” in the VDI plugin auto-update dialog presented to the user when a VDI plugin is either missing or incompatible.
• Enhancements to hybrid meeting security shield information
  When users click the green shield icon during hybrid meetings, the meeting information and hybrid meeting disclaimer are properly reflected in the security shield’s pop-up window.
• Limit selected media source ports for VDI client
  Zoom Phone account owners and admins can select the number of source ports required for Zoom clients. Account owners and admins must have a minimum of 50 selected ports. This selection applies to the VDI client for Zoom Phone.
• Smart Recording
  Account owners and admins can enable Smart Recording to allow hosts to get more out of their Zoom meetings and webinars. Smart Recording uses Zoom’s machine learning model to automatically divide cloud recordings into smart chapters for easy review, highlight important information, and create next steps for attendees to take action.
• Display picture or avatar in video preview
  Before joining a meeting, the video preview will show the same image or avatar displayed to other participants when joining a meeting with the camera off.

  • Contrast fix for the Raise Hand emoji
    In all video views (including Immersive View), a background tile has been added behind the Raise Hand emoji to create more contrast and prevent the emoji from blending into the background.
  • Bypass Waiting Room with VDI plugin policy
    A fix was added to support bypassing the waiting room when bringing in a participant with the PingServerFromThinClient policy.
  • Support cleanup of VDI plugin only using Zoom Clean Tool
    Clean Zoom uninstaller has updated the /vdi_clean switch to only remove VDI plugin related software. For more information, refer to the Uninstall switches section in the Mass-deploying with preconfigured settings for Windows support article.
  • Missing watermark if host disables/enables during meeting
    An issue was discovered where watermarks were not being displayed if the meeting host disabled watermarks during the meeting, and then, enabled it again. This problem has been fixed.
  • VDI Plugin Auto-Update DLL version
    Changes were made to address a problem where it was possible for an older plugin to replace the Auto-Update DLL used to manage plugins with an older version.
  • Stop camera when closing video settings after audio-only avatar selection
    The camera indicator was not turning off when a user first disabled the camera for audio-only avatar mode, then opened the settings for video configuration and closed the dialog. This issue has been resolved.
  • Improve error handling for wrong phone IP address
    Changes were made to handle an error condition where a phone provided an IP address that was not correct.
  • Set background to default when using 3D avatar
    Since the background option of Blur cannot be used with 3D avatars, a change was made to switch the background back to a default background if an avatar was selected.
  • Link to manual download options if Auto-Update fails to download
    If the download for Auto-Update of the VDI Zoom meeting client fails, the option to manually download an update has been linked to the VDI download page.
  • Improved display of active screen sharing when joining meeting
    The time required to display shared screen content when joining a meeting, where a screen sharing session was already in progress, has been reduced.
  • VDI plugin connection failure time outs
    Changes were made to address a connection failure that could occur when there was a long connection time between the thin client and the server.
• macOS issues
  • Improvements for Mac system display options
    There are fixes for System Preferences display issues. In ​​Mission Control, the Displays have separate Spaces option has been fixed. In Dock & Menu Bar, the Automatically hide and show the menu bar in full screen option has been fixed.
  • Support for Citrix Workspace App and M1
    The VDI plugin for macOS supports both the Citrix Workspace App (Intel) and Citrix Workspace App (Apple Silicon).
  • Report IP address for Mac VDI plugin in Dashboard
    An error was reported and has been fixed for client versions by VDI reports where the Mac IP address for the VDI plugin was not being displayed.
  • Improve the stability of video window synchronization for VMware plugin
    An issue has been fixed, where the video window was lost or was in the wrong size/position in some corner cases because the VMware ScreenCapture Interface was released unexpectedly.
  • VDI Plugin Auto-Update plugin version

    The VDI Plugin Auto-Update software on the Mac will always maintain the latest version even after the downgrade of the VDI plugins.

• Windows and Linux issues
  • Exit meeting when user forces sleep mode
    An issue was fixed to allow Linux users to manually put their machines into sleep mode during a meeting and to also exit the meeting when sleep was forced.
  • Prompt and save when users accept a certificate
    A change (made in a previous release) would prevent connecting directly to the Zoom meeting if there was a certificate error using a Windows or Linux client. This has been changed to prompt the user to accept the certificate and store that accepted certificate for future meetings.
  • Support for 3D Avatar for HP ThinPro
    A fix was added to support 3D avatars on the HP ThinPro platform.
• Platform-specific issues
  • Loss of video in Settings if VMware session was lost
    A condition was discovered where the VMware Horizon client crashed, and video no longer displayed in the Settings dialog.
  • Stop Zoom when uninstalling AWS plugin
    A change was made to address an issue where Zoom was not forced to exit when uninstalling the AWS plugin.
  • Installation repair for AWS plugin
    A change was made to correct an issue where using the MSI option to repair did not correctly handle the AWS VDI plugin.
  • Improvements for multiple monitors with Amazon WorkSpaces
    A problem where the video was rendered incorrectly when using dual monitors in an Amazon WorkSpace environment has been fixed.

    The default camera control mode configured in the Zoom web portal will be used after joining a Microsoft Teams meeting. In addition, users will also be able to select camera control modes (manual, auto-framing, speaker focus) and accompanying camera control functions (pan-tilt-zoom, preset controls mode) depending on their devices. Windows and Mac devices can use manual mode and preset camera controls. Appliances can use all the functions listed above that are supported by the device. These options are only available when one camera is connected.   
  • Reactions for Zoom Rooms - Win
    Zoom Room users can send and receive reactions in meetings and webinars.

    The maximum number of simultaneous cameras supported by Zoom Rooms multi-camera mode is now four. Zoom Rooms must meetsystem requirementsto use the full quantity of simultaneous cameras.

    The Whiteboard More menu can be used to toggle Collaboration Cursors on or off.

    Users can toggle this view, which adds or removes their video feed from their personal meeting window, from the Change Views section of the user interface.

    When updating Zoom Rooms administrators can override activity in the Room  and upgrade to the newest version of Zoom Rooms immediately. This is an alternative, and not the default option, to the regular upgrade process which takes account of upcoming meetings and performs the upgrade when the room is free.
  • Third-party meeting join buttons on the home screen - Win, Appliances, iPad zr, iOS zrc, Android zrc, Win zrc, Web zrc
    Administrators can enable join buttons for third party meeting providers (Microsoft Teams, Cisco Webex) that will be displayed on the Zoom Rooms home screen.

    Administrators can upgrade a Zoom Room from the device itself (Zoom Rooms for Touch) or Zoom Room Controller rather than using the web portal. This function can be toggled from the web portal.

    Supported devices will now display the following icons in kiosk mode: Mute/Unmute, Video on/Off, View Participants. Administrators can toggle these icons on the Zoom web portal.

    Administrators can enable or disable a passcode requirement for users that want to control a room's camera in-meeting.

    Administrators can disable the default prompt that appears when connecting a BYOD device to a Zoom Room. Instead, users will need to use the BYOD icon on the Zoom Rooms controller to switch to BYOD content

    If a user has turned off their video, the video preview before a meeting will display the user’s profile picture instead of just the user’s name.

    The top right corner paging icon can be used as a speed dial. A user can press the icon and immediately page to their programmed paging extension.
  • Yealink EXP50 for MP56 MP58 VP59 smart paging layout
    When enabled, the pages on the expansion module(s) are distributed across all connected expansion modules. For example, Page 1 will be on module 1, and Page 2 will be on module 2, and so on. If you have only one expansion module connected, the pages are distributed sequentially on the module.
  • Ability to hide country code when receiving incoming calls

    Users can increase the call waiting volume to ensure they are notified when another call comes in.
