Low level definitions for VOD Channel analytics metrics

This table provides a detailed view of how each metric is processed behind the scenes. Refer to it if you want a deeper understanding of how the analytics are calculated and how each metric behaves. Unless stated otherwise, these definitions apply consistently to their corresponding metrics throughout the VOD Channel analytics page.

Some metrics behave differently when used in a Videos context compared to a Viewers context. For example:

In both contexts, the metric counts all responses rather than unique responses. Edge cases such as deleted comments or overlapping watch segments are noted in the specific tables where they apply.

MetricDescriptionExample
Video metrics
Channel page visitsThe total number of times the VOD channel details page was accessed, including multiple visits by the same viewer. This metric counts only visits to the Channel details page and does not include visits to individual video pages or the Hub content page. This metric helps track overall interest in the channel itself, independent of engagement with individual videos.
  • If a viewer opens the Channel details page and watches multiple videos from it, it counts as 1 visit.
  • If the same viewer refreshes the Channel details page, it counts as an additional visit.
  • If the same viewer returns to the Channel details page on a different day, it counts as another visit.
  • Visits to the Hub content page or directly to individual video pages are not counted as Channel page visits.
  • If a viewer navigates from the Hub content page and clicks the Browse videos button to open the Channel details page, it is counted as a Channel page visit.
Video impressionsThe number of visits to an individual video page. Visits from the Next videos section, Channel details page, or Hub content page are not counted. Each page visit counts separately regardless of how many videos are watched on that page.
Channel registrationsThe total number of registrations for the channel. Hidden if channel registration is not required.
Total video views / Total views
  • Video views are counted when a viewer clicks play for the first time on the video page.
  • If the viewer plays or pauses multiple times, fast forwards, or rewinds, it still counts as one video view.
  • If the viewer leaves the page and returns to click play again, that registers as a new video view.
  • Video views are not unique.
  • If a viewer watches the same video three times across three separate visits, it counts as three video views.
  • If the viewer watches three different videos, that also counts as three video views.
Unique video views / Unique views
  • Unique video views count each unique user-video pair.
  • For the special case of bypass authentication, each user in a new web session is treated as a new viewer.
  • If the same viewer watches the same video three times across three visits, it counts as one unique video view.
  • If the same viewer watches three different videos in a single visit, it counts as three unique video views.
  • If three different viewers watch the same video, it counts as three unique video views.
Total watch-time
  • Total watch time sums all view segments for all videos across the channel, including overlapping segments.
  • It is measured to the second, with no minimum watch time required.
  • In most places, total watch time is shown in the format [ x hr y min z sec ]. The Overview metric tile displays it as [ x hr y min ].

Note: Assume intervals are written in the format [minutes:seconds].

  • If a viewer watches a one-hour video from [00:00 – 20:30] and [10:00 – 30:00], total watch time for this viewer is 20 minutes and 30 seconds plus 20 minutes, or 40 minutes and 30 seconds.
  • If the viewer then watches the video again from [00:00 – 60:00], total watch time for this viewer becomes 40 minutes 30 seconds plus 60 minutes, or 100 minutes 30 seconds.
Average watch-timeCalculated by dividing Total watch time (Row 6) by Total video views (Row 4).Total watch time is 50 minutes and total video views is 5. The average watch-time is 10 minutes.
Video completion

Video completion counts when a viewer watches at least 95% of a video, combining overlapping watch segments.

Note: Assume intervals are in [minutes:seconds].

  • If a viewer watches [00:00 – 30:00] and [20:00 – 40:00], the combined watch interval is [00:00 – 40:00]. For a 60-minute video, this does not count as completed.
  • If a viewer watches [00:00 – 05:00] and then [55:00 – 60:00], they have watched 10 minutes out of 60 and the video is not considered complete.
  • If a viewer watches [00:00 – 58:00], the video is counted as completed.

Assume a 60-minute video.

Note: Assume intervals are in [minutes:seconds].

  • Viewer watches 57 consecutive 1-minute segments from [00:00 – 57:00]. Video is counted as completed (95% watched).
  • Viewer watches 56 consecutive 1-minute segments from [00:00 – 56:00]. Video is not completed (<95%).
  • Viewer watches 30 segments from [00:00 – 30:00], rewinds, and repeats the same 30 minutes. Total watch time is 60 minutes, but only 50% of the video is viewed. Video is not completed.
  • Viewer watches 30 segments on one day and 30 segments the next day. Total watch time is 60 minutes, but only 50% of the video is viewed. Video is not completed.
  • Viewer watches [00:00 – 05:00] and then [55:00 – 60:00]. Only 10 minutes of content is watched. Video is not completed.
Completed videosThis counts the number of videos a viewer has fully completed based on the Video completion definition.
Completion rateThis measures the percentage of unique viewers who have completed watching a video based on the Video completion definition.
Engagement metrics
Comments

This counts the total number of comments submitted on a video. Viewers must sign in to comment. Deleted comments are removed from the total count.

  • In the video context, it shows all comments for that video.
  • In the viewer context, it shows all comments the viewer submitted across videos unless filtered by a specific video.

A viewer posts three comments on a video.

  • Comments for the video equals three.
  • Comments for the viewer equals three.
  • Viewers leaving comments equals one.
  • If the viewer deletes all three comments, all counts update to zero.
Poll & quiz responses

This counts the total number of responses submitted for polls and quizzes.

  • In the video context, it shows all responses submitted for that video across its polls and quizzes.
  • In the viewer context, it shows all responses submitted by that viewer across videos unless filtered by a specific video.
Note: Anonymous responses are included in the video context but excluded in the viewer context for legal reasons.

Q&A questions asked

This counts the number of questions submitted by viewers or channel hosts for a video. Viewers must sign in to submit questions or answers. Answers from hosts do not count toward this metric.

  • In the video context, it shows all questions asked for that video.
  • In the viewer context, it shows all questions submitted by that viewer across videos unless filtered by a specific video.
Note: Deleted questions or answers are removed from the totals.

If a viewer submits one question and the host answers it:

  • The video Q&A questions asked is 1.
  • The viewer’s Q&A questions asked is 1.
  • If the viewer deletes the question, both counts return to 0, and the number of viewers using Q&A reflects only the remaining participants.
Reactions

This counts the number of reactions submitted by viewers on a video. Each viewer can submit between 0 and 5 reactions per video.

  • In the video context, it shows the total number of reactions for that video.
  • In the viewer context, it shows all reactions submitted by that viewer across videos.
Note: Deleted reactions are removed from both video and viewer counts.
  • If a viewer submits 3 reactions on a video, the video and viewer reaction counts are 3.
  • If the same viewer removes these 3 and submits 2 new reactions, the video and viewer counts update to 2.
  • If the same viewer then removes the 2 reactions, both counts drop to 0.

Note: The number of viewers using reactions reflects only those who currently have active reactions.

Resource document downloads

This counts the number of times a resource is downloaded. Unless specified otherwise, this includes both channel-level and video-level resources.

  • In the video context, it counts only video-level resources.
  • In the viewer context, it counts all downloads by that viewer across both channel and video resources.
If a viewer downloads a resource twice, the total is 2. If another viewer downloads the same resource once, the total becomes 3.
Watch percentageThis is the percentage of a video that a viewer has watched, combining overlapping segments. It is calculated by dividing the total duration watched by the video’s full duration. Percentages always round down.

For a 60-minute video:

Note: Assume intervals are in [minutes:seconds].

  • Viewer watches continuously from [00:00 – 57:00]. Watch percentage is 95.
  • Viewer watches continuously from [00:00 – 56:00]. Watch percentage is 93.
  • Viewer watches from [00:00 – 30:00], rewinds, and watches [00:00 – 30:00] again. Watch percentage is 50.
  • Viewer watches [00:00 – 30:00] one day and [00:00 – 30:00] another day. Watch percentage is 50.
  • Viewer watches [00:00 – 05:00], then skips to [55:00 – 60:00]. Watch percentage is 16.
Average completion rateThis is the average watch percentage across all videos for a viewer. If a viewer watches 20% of one video and 80% of a second video, the average completion rate is 50%.
