Enterprise Auto Update policies for the Zoom VDI plugin

Zoom’s Enterprise Auto Update policies allow system administrators the ability to keep managed Zoom VDI Universal Plugin installations up to date in accordance with their own policies and preferences. These policies will afford administrators granular control over Zoom VDI Universal Plugin auto-update behavior and UI, enabling them to tailor the experience at the group level to meet the needs of their user base.

This policy specifies the Auto-update plugin version for Windows and prioritizes that version. If this setting is not configured (empty), it will find the best match version of the VDI plugin based on the VDI client version.

UpdatePluginLater

By default, the update prompt does not include a Later option. Enabling this policy modifies the prompt to include the Later option.

0 - (Default) The auto-update plugin later option is disabled.

1 - Enables the Later option, which closes the dialog. The next time the user connects, the same dialog will be presented if the VDI plugin management software detects that an action is still required.

2 - Enables the Later option, which waits until the user disconnects from their virtual desktop(s) and then performs the update.

3 - Enables the Later option, which waits until the user disconnects from their virtual desktop(s) and then performs the update. In addition, the OK option is disabled.

Note: Option 3 is only supported in version 6.4.10 or higher.

Enabling this policy modifies the prompt to include an Opt-Out option. This can be used with the UpdatePluginLater to provide more plugin management update options.

0 - (Default) The auto-update plugin opt-out option is disabled.

1 - Enables the Opt Out option, which users will need to confirm before changing the behavior. Users can also opt back in through the dedicated VDI Plugin Management app.

Auto Update Policies Thin Client

While plugin auto updates are enabled on the VM side, EnableVDIPluginAutoUpgrade=0 is set on the thin client side for some machines. As a result, not every thin client will automatically update the Universal Plugin.
VDIPluginAutoUpdateOptOut

When enabled, users can opt out of automatic updates for their VDI plugin.

0 - (Default)  Plugin auto update opt-out is not enabled. (Plugin auto update is enabled).

1 -  Plugin auto update opt-out is enabled ( and Plugin auto update is disabled).

Requires version 5.17.10 or higher.

Users can disable plugin auto-updates by setting VDIPluginAutoUpdateOptOut=1 on the Thin Client side without admin privileges.

This setting can be changed via the Plugin Management App on the Thin Client side.

AllowDowngrade

When enabled, users can downgrade their VDI plugin.

0 - (Default) Downgrading the VDI plugin is not allowed.

1 - Downgrade via plugin auto update is allowed.

This policy applies to Windows and macOS thin clients as well as  Local_Machine policies only.

EnableVDIPluginMgmtAutoUpdate

Enables the plugin auto-update feature to be managed in the VDI Plugin Management tool for the thin client.

0 - The plugin management auto update is disabled.

1 - (Default) The plugin management auto update is enabled.

This setting can be changed via the Plugin Management App on the Thin Client side.

 

 

Example configurations for VDI auto update policies

Below are a few possible configurations based on different levels of version control and end-user visibility.

Note: From VDI 6.5.10, EnableVDIPluginAutoUpgrade is enabled by default if the plugin management version is 6.2.12 or higher.

Allow the option to click install later, and then updates automatically after the user disconnects.
  • Set UpdatePluginLater=2 in the VM side
Exclude some machines from plugin auto-updates and include other thin clients that can auto-update the plugin. (In this case,  EnableVDIPluginAutoUpgrade=1 is already configured on the VM side).

Configure either one of the following policies:

  • Set EnableVDIPluginAutoUpgrade=0 in the thin client 
  • Set VDIPluginAutoUpdateOptOut=1 in the thin Client
Provide users with the option to opt out of the Universal Plugin auto-update (especially for BYOD users).
  • Set EnableVDIPluginAutoUpdateOptOut=1 in the VM
Customize the plugin auto-update dialog description to display "Please update now".
  • Set VDIPluginAutoUpdateDescription="Please update now" on the VM side
Hide the Universal Plugin auto update process from users.
  • Set ForceSilentVDIPluginUpdate=1 in the VM
Allow users to downgrade the Universal Plugin to a lower version.
  •  Set AllowDowngrade=1 in the thin client
