Understanding Recording Studio constraints and troubleshooting

Recording Studio is a feature within Zoom Webinars Plus and Events that captures isolated audio and video streams from each participant during a meeting. This allows for higher-quality post-production editing compared to standard cloud recordings. Understanding its limitations and how to resolve common issues will help you get the best results from your recordings.

What to know

Platform and client support

Platform scope

Recording Studio is only available for meetings created through Zoom Webinars Plus and Events. Webinar event types are not supported.

Client support

All clients (web, mobile, and older Zoom app versions) can participate and produce an isolated cloud recording. Only supported desktop app versions (Windows or macOS, version 7.0 or later) additionally produce local recordings for higher-quality output.

Mobile clients

Mobile clients can't upload local recordings — they contribute cloud streams only.

Switching clients mid-session

If a participant switches between a supported and unsupported client mid-session (for example, desktop to mobile), they may have upload gaps or missing local files.

Recording quality and content

Video quality

Local recordings support up to 1080p at 60 frames per second (FPS), approximately 6–8 Mbps. 4K support is planned for a future release.

Screen shares

Screen shares are captured in the cloud recording only, not in local files. Local files include participant video and audio only.

Cloud fallback quality

Cloud fallback recordings are lower quality and may not include all Enhanced Media features.

Participants and files

Participant naming

Participants joining from different accounts or environments may appear under different display names (for example, "Guest Guest" vs. their full name), or be labeled as "Participant 1." Cloud recordings still map correctly by user ID.

Upload reliability

Large local files can fail to upload if the client quits or loses its network connection. If automatic upload fails, the local file is kept on the participant's device for manual upload.

File deletion

Deletion controls are only available for studio recording files managed within Zoom Events. Global files can't be deleted directly yet.

Troubleshooting Recording Studio issues

Fix a local recording that didn't upload

Uploads are designed to be resilient. An interrupted upload pauses with a resume option, and an incomplete upload retries automatically when the connection returns. Local files are only deleted after a successful upload, so a failed upload never means the recording is lost — the file remains on the participant's device.

  1. Wait for the upload to resume automatically once the network connection is restored.
  2. If the file still hasn't uploaded, locate it on the recording participant's local device.
  3. Share the file manually using a file-sharing method such as Google Drive, Dropbox, or email.
Note: Zoom is actively improving the in-product experience for locating these files.

Fix a missing take in the cloud

Cloud snippets are generated asynchronously and depend on the host client successfully reporting take information to Zoom.

  1. Allow additional processing time after the event ends before checking for the take.
  2. If the take still doesn't appear, use the corresponding local file on the participant's device as your highest-quality source.

Fix Recording Studio not turning on

  1. Confirm that cloud recording is enabled for both the account and the event.
  2. Verify that the event is a single-session meeting, not a webinar.
  3. Confirm that the account holds a Webinars Plus or Zoom Events license. Recording Studio is enabled automatically on these accounts.
