Using location-based bandwidth management

Key terminology

Decision workflow for location-based bandwidth management

The VDI bandwidth decision tree follows the steps below. The location-aware path is the new functionality introduced by this feature; the remaining steps preserve existing client behavior.

  1. Is the VDI client in fallback mode?
  2. Is the VDI policy GPOBandwidthOverrideWeb = 1?
  3. Do VDI-specific bandwidth values exist under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Zoom\Zoom Meetings\VDI\bandwidth?
  4. Does the user's profile location match any location configured under GPO?
  5. On the thin client, does IsInOffice = 1 exist in the install-folder .ini?

Registry lookup for per-location bandwidth

When "Does the user's profile location match any location configured under GPO?" is evaluated as Yes, the client computes the registry path by matching the user's profile location to the corresponding subkey directly under bandwidth:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Zoom\Zoom Meetings\VDI\bandwidth\<location_id>

If a matching entry exists, the client applies that bandwidth configuration. If no matching subkey is found, the client falls back to the legacy office/home decision (step 5).

Thin-client IsInOffice fallback

When no profile-location match is found (step 5), the client reads IsInOffice from the thin-client configuration file:

[DeviceLocation]
IsInOffice=1

Example configurations for location-based bandwidth management

New (per-location)

To set the bandwidth limit for ICA, UDP, and/or Direct mode for a specific office location, apply the following bandwidth settings in policy. Replace <location_id> with the numeric profile location identifier for the target office.

ICA mode

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Zoom\Zoom Meetings\VDI\bandwidth\<location_id>\ica
Up=dword:00000500
Down=dword:00000400

UDP mode

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Zoom\Zoom Meetings\VDI\bandwidth\<location_id>\udp
Up=dword:00000300
Down=dword:00000200

Direct mode

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Zoom\Zoom Meetings\VDI\bandwidth\<location_id>\direct
Up=dword:00000300
Down=dword:00000200

Existing (legacy office/home)

To set the bandwidth limit for ICA, UDP, and/or Direct mode when the user is in the office (IsInOffice=1), apply the following bandwidth settings in policy:

Office - ICA mode

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Zoom\Zoom Meetings\VDI\bandwidth\office\ica
Up=dword:00000300
Down=dword:00000200

Office - UDP mode

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Zoom\Zoom Meetings\VDI\bandwidth\office\udp
Up=dword:00000320
Down=dword:00000120

Office - Direct mode

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Zoom\Zoom Meetings\VDI\bandwidth\office\direct
Up=dword:00000220
Down=dword:00000110

To set the bandwidth limit for ICA, UDP, and/or Direct mode when the user is not in the office (IsInOffice=0 or not defined in the bandwidth_config.ini file), apply the following bandwidth settings in policy:

Home - ICA mode

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Zoom\Zoom Meetings\VDI\bandwidth\home\ica
Up=dword:00000300
Down=dword:00000200

Home - UDP mode

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Zoom\Zoom Meetings\VDI\bandwidth\home\udp
Up=dword:00000320
Down=dword:00000120

Home - Direct mode

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Zoom\Zoom Meetings\VDI\bandwidth\home\direct
Up=dword:00000220
Down=dword:00000110
